Abstract of “The red forest”
"The Red Forest" is the testimony of my family about what happened to them in eastern Poland during World War II. In a quiet rural town called Vigoda between Lomza and Zambrow, my family lived a prosperous life, and was suddenly uprooted from its home. My family was persecuted like wild animals. Lived in fear and constant danger of death while adapting to changing conditions.
They managed to escape and to hide in the forests, in bare fields, in pits and even under a pigsty. This is due to the courage of my father Yitzchak Shumowitz and the help of villagers who endangered themselves and their families. They became one of the “Righteous of the Nations” in Yad Vashem , Jerusalem.
In a narrow, crowded bunker, was prepared a birth. The obstetrician of the child was the father of the baby, who wrote the memoirs, Yitzhak Shlomowitz,
Shortly after the German invasion of the town, my grandfather turned to my father and implored him: "The fate of the Jewish people was doomed to death, be courageous, do not wait for miracles, act to change your fate and God will be with you." These words echoed in my father's mind throughout the years of war and tribulation. According to my father, these words held him and gave him the strength to overcome all obstacles, protect his family and survive with them.
Believing that the best and the most noble in man will eventually prevail, give them hope for a better future and give the family the power to deal jointly against any calamity.
The story of the hardships of my family is a "micro" that describes the period of darkness and horror, is authentic in its events and in its simple and direct form and it illustrates to the reader the machine of death in the "macro"
The pigpen under which the family was hiding remained as it had been in the past. The place has become an attraction for many visitors from all over the world
