Seeking a haven in a hostile world. The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 can be seen as a precursor of the German perpetrated Holocaust, after Hitler came to power. It was the result of religious and racial discrimination. It is estimated that of the seven million inhabitants of Spain about half a million were Jews. Approximately half of them left the country, around 200,000 converted in order to remain and the rest died, before or on the way.

Many of those who converted practiced their old religion in secrecy. Those that left wandered all over the known world to find a haven that was mostly temporary.

The book tells the saga of one such family that left their country under duress. It starts with a young woman, with two small children, leaving her beloved Toledo. She kept a diary of her family's wandering until her passing. On the way she finds both love and tragedy, overcoming obstacles through faith. The book ends with her grandson telling the rest of the story from his home in Lithuania. The hazardous journey takes them through Portugal, Algeria, Crete, Venice, and Pinsk, the family having to cope with hardships and uncertainty. The grandson also visits the Holy Land and tells of his impressions.
The author, Dr. Alex Bloch, earned his Ph.D. in history and taught in this field. He also has an extensive engineering and management background. In addition to his professional publications he has authored a number of novels of which this is his fourth.
